Jalopy + nik (beatnik, peacenik, assorted other niks).
Juh- lop- nik.

Don't recall the originator.

It comes from an ancient Roman word for "a lover of fast chariots".

Don't quote me on that, though.

I believe Spinelli started jalopnik, which is a mixture of "beatnik" and "jalopy".

This leads me to assume Spinelli came up with it?

Petty sure it was based on a Swedish/Russian girl he dated. Jhal Ohp, and she took the name Nikh to fit in with the Russians.

This is the actual meaning behind the term.

I think it may have been both Spinelli and Wert. Don't quote me there.

I believe it was Mike Spinelli. He doesn't get enough credit for what he created does he?

I believe it's pronounced "HA-Lopnik," like "jalapeño."

As for its meaning, I could be wrong, but I believe Jalopnik is an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era.

Thanks to my mild dyslexia, I always read it as Jalopink (jah-lo-pink). Somehow my mind made sense of it as the combination of "jalopy" and "pink" with jalopy meaning what it always does and pink as in pink-slip. A lot of it probably has to do with the fact that I used to watch Speed Channel's Pinks all the time when it first came out (even though Jalopnik was technically operating before Pinks was produced).

Anyway, according to the all-powerful wiki, it's a combo of jalopy and beatnik .
